Since starring in the Oscar winning film Silver
Linings Playbook (based on the Matthew Quick novel), actor Bradley Cooper
has become an advocate for mental health awareness. “People would come up to me and share their struggles, telling me
how they connected with this character that I played, and I think that’s what
helped me to see that all of us are touched in a real, meaningful way with this
illness.” Cooper was surprised to learn that his best friend had a diagnosis of
bipolar disorder.
While some groups felt the movie’s portrayal of mental
illness was too simplistic, Bradley hopes Silver Linings will help to reduce
stigma and foster discussions about the challenges people living with mental health issues and families their face.
