A Wrinkle in Time

“A book, too, can be a star, ‘explosive material, capable of stirring up fresh life endlessly,’ a living fire to lighten the darkness, leading out into the expanding universe.”
“There will no longer be so many pleasant things to look at if responsible people do not do something about the unpleasant ones.”
“To love is to be vulnerable; and it is only in vulnerability and risk—not safety and security—that we overcome darkness.”
“There’s nothing left except to try.”

Rain and Snow

Hopefully the snow is behind us, but Signature has a list of 10 books that are perfect for reading in snowy and rainy weather.
The cover of the book Olive Kitteridge  The cover of the book Y is for Yesterday
We like to have an 'emergency stash' for these occasions. At prices from 50 cents to $2, the Friends Book Nook is a thrifty way to always have a few titles on hand.

Showerthoughts on Books

ShowerthoughtsShowerthoughts is a loose term that applies to the types of thoughts you might have while carrying out a routine task like showering.

If history is written by the victors, imagine how much we are missing.

Books are actually tattoed trees.

There are no quotes by fictional characters, only quotes from writers given to fictional characters at the right moment for context and maximum effect.

Reading is just looking at a dead piece of wood for hours and hallucinating.

In a Bad Mood?

A BBC article explains how bad moods can effect our brain. In particular, it decreases feelings of empathy. "Anxious and depressed patients who suffer from an excess negative emotions are more likely to focus on their own problems and be isolated," says researcher Qiao-Tasserit.

The article suggests that the"next time you are in a foul mood, consider the effect it might have on the people you communicate with day-to-day. You may also want to time your reading of chilling dystopian novels or horror movies wisely. "

Why not check out some humor/comedy books/DVDs or try one of Ocee's yoga classes?

I, too

I, too, sing America.

I am the darker brother.
They send me to eat in the kitchen
When company comes,
But I laugh,
And eat well,
And grow strong.

Tomorrow, I’ll be at the table
When company comes.
Nobody’ll dare
Say to me, “Eat in the kitchen,"
They’ll see how beautiful I am
And be ashamed—
 I, too, am America.

Langston Hughes, 1902 - 1967

Blank White Spaces

Margaret Atwood“We were the people who were not in the papers. We lived in the blank white spaces at the edges of print. It gave us more freedom.
We lived in the gaps between the stories.”

It costs nothing.
It makes us slow down.
