Before Kindle, tablets, and iphones people still needed to carry books with them. Atlas Obscura has a great article about "girdle books". In the 14th-16th centuries, people would attach small books to their belts (girdle). This allowed clergy, nuns, lawyers, etc. to to have information at hand. The smallest, from Scotland, measures 2.5 inches by 1 7/8 inch!
